Washoe commissioners reject easing drought plan

RENO - Washoe County commissioners won't relax the drought strategy in their long-term water management policy to mirror that of the area's largest water supplier.

Commissioners on Tuesday rejected a proposal to plan for a drought lasting nine years instead of the existing 10-year standard.

The change was recommended by an advisory panel of water experts. It would conform with the lesser standard adopted by the Truckee Meadows Water Authority.

But with the region already in its fifth year of drought, some commissioners said reducing the amount of water reserved for a prolonged drought made little sense.
