Galena girls give unbeaten Reed a battle

Stopping the Reed High girls basketball team is certainly a lot easier said than done. While Galena came closer than any other Nevada has all season, the Grizzlies still fell on the short end of a 60-49 score against undefeated Reed in a High Desert League contest Friday night in Sparks.

"They're just a very good team," Galena coach Karen Friel said of Reed. "You know what you need to do to stop them, but doing it is another matter entirely."

Reed (4-0 league, 13-0 overall) led 17-8 after one quarter and 28-21 at halftime. Galena (3-2, 12-6) cut the deficit to six points once in the third quarter and once again in the fourth, but the Grizzlies were never able to get any closer than that.

The 11-point margin of victory was the smallest Reed has had in 13 games this season.

Dominique Pavich scored a game-high 15 points, while Caitlin Anderson added 12 and Caitlin Crofts 10 for Galena.

Reed was led by standout point guard Maria Moore with 13 points and post player Brittany Moore with 11.

For Galena, freshman Caitlin Mullens was solid in her man-to-man defensive coverage of Maria Moore, according to Friel, while Pavich played well defensively against Brittany Moore.

"We had some turnovers early and got ourselves in a hole, and we never could quite dig our way out," Friel said. "But this was actually the hardest we've played in a while. I felt very good about our effort tonight."
