Carson City

History author to visit Carson City Library

The Carson City Library will host Western history author and freelance writer Jan Cleere on at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Her recently released book, "More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Nevada Women," (The Globe Pequot Press), presents the stories of 12 pioneering women, plus a remarkable group of nuns, all born before 1900, who displayed extraordinary courage as they broke through social, cultural, and political barriers to advance women's roles.

"More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Nevada Women," will be available for purchase and signing by the author. The program will be in the library auditorium.

Washoe Head Start accepts applications

Washoe Tribe Head Start is accepting child applications for the Stewart Head Start Program in Carson City and the Dresslerville Head Start Program in Gardnerville for the 2005-06 school year.

Enrollment is open to all low-income children ages 3-5 including children with disabilities and special needs.

Head Start is a free developmental preschool program. Bus service is provided. For applications and information, call 265-1074.

Democratic women to hear parks speakers

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grandma Hattie's. Guest speakers will be Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission members Donna Curtis and Charlene Herst.

Douglas County

Committee invites all Republicans to join

The Douglas County Republican Central Committee is inviting registered Republicans of the county to become members.

Voting members must be a registered Republican voter in Douglas County and attend the monthly meetings. Meetings alternate between the valley and the lake areas of the county on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

The next meeting will be July 14 at the Stateline sheriff substation in Judge Glasson's courtroom, 175 Highway 50, Stateline.

Coffee and social will begin at 7 p.m. Guest speaker will be Bill Reinhard, who has worked as a deputy for both the secretary of state and controller.

Tahoe Singles to host barbecue

The Carson Valley Branch of Tahoe Singles will hold a barbecue at 5 p.m. Saturday at home of Alicia Powers. All singles from the Reno/Tahoe area are invited.

The theme is tropical, and piña coladas and barbecued spareribs will be served.

It is a potluck and guests are asked to bring appetizers, salads (not potato) or side dishes and $5.

Drivers needed for disabled veterans

The Disabled American Veterans Transportation Network needs drivers.

The DAV van hauls veterans from Minden, Gardnerville, Carson City and Dayton to the Reno VA medical center for their doctor appointments Monday through Friday at no cost to the veterans.

This is strictly a volunteer service. Anyone who can donate one day a month or more to help a veteran is asked to call Ed Johnson at 884-3240.
