Cardinals stay alive with victory

The Carson Cardinals baseball team stayed alive in the Joe DiMaggio Tournament with a 14-4 win over the Northwest Royals on Friday.

The Cardinals, 2-1 in the tournament, will play at 10 a.m. today at Wooster against an opponent to be determined. If the Cardinals will that game, they will play the loser between the Reno Muckdogs and the Sierra Sun Devils later today

A win in that game would advance the Cardinals to Sunday's championship round against the winner between the Muckdogs and Sun Devils. If the Cardinals make it to the championship round, they would have to win twice to win the title.

Nick Smallman went the distance to pick up the win against the Royals in a game that was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule. The Cardinals scored four runs in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead, three runs in the fourth to make it 9-2 and five runs in the fifth to make it 14-3.

The Cardinals banged out 14 hits. Jeremiah Teeter had three hits and three runs, Jeff Young had two hits, including a triple, Tony Fagan, Jack Jacquet and and Bryt Lewis all had two hits, Brooks Greenlee had a hit and two runs, David Leid added a hit and Royal Good scored two runs.
