Two people were found dead this morning in a home on Hawaii Circle, Sheriff Ken Furlong said in a press conference around 11 a.m.
Police are calling it a murder/suicide. Although no cause of death has been established, Furlong said the home was riddled with bullet holes and broken glass.
The Nevada Department of Corrections identified the victim as employee Shelly Hachenberger.
In a memorandum to her family and co-workers, Director Jackie Crawford said, "The Nevada Department of Corrections has lost one of its finest staff to a senseless crime," she wrote. "Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Shelly knew her as a hard-working, talented and devoted team member as well as a devoted mother.
"My heart goes out to all those who are saddened by her passing."
The initial report was made at 7:12 a.m. of a man shooting at a house. After the man entered the home, sheriff's deputies attempted to communicate with him.
Law enforcement officials closed several streets in the area of Fairview and Roop during the standoff.
The sheriff said the two had a history of domestic violence.
More details will be posted as they become available.
