Patches and badges on display

A retired Carson City deputy is putting on the city's first law enforcement insignia collector's show.

Former Deputy Gladys Brister and Dennis Daniels are hosting the event Saturday at the Eagles Lodge on East Fifth Street.

"Dennis was telling me about these patch-and-badge shows, and I went to a couple of them and really enjoyed it. We talked it over and decided to have one here in Carson," Brister said.

Insignia collectors from throughout Nevada and California will appraise, trade, or sell memorabilia, Brister said.

Thirty-eight vendors, including some from Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Las Vegas, Southern California and the Bay area, will be at the event, she said.

Brister's own collection of photographs and insignia grace the walls of the Carson City Sheriff's Department lobby most days. She temporarily took them down to display at the show.

General admission is $3. There is no cover for law enforcement personnel with proper identification. Classic law enforcement vehicles will be on display in the parking lot at no charge.

Brister said most patches go for under $5, but older badges or patches can run into the thousands of dollars. Brister's collection includes patches for the Carson City Sheriff's Department from 1974.

But the one patch she wants has been elusive thus far.

"I'd really like to get a hold of an old Texas Ranger badge," she said. "That's one thing I'm looking for. I probably couldn't afford it if I found it, though."
