Carson, Douglas place four on all-Sierra Nevada team

Douglas and Carson High Schools placed four players each on the all-Sierra Nevada baseball team.


In softball, Douglas also placed four players on the all-Sierra Nevada team while Carson had three players selected.


The All-Sierra Nevada teams are selected by the sports staffs from seven Tahoe-Carson area newspapers: The Nevada Appeal, the Record-Courier, the South Tahoe Daily Tribune, the Lahontan Valley News, the Tahoe World, the Tahoe Bonanza and the Sierra Sun. Players from schools that are covered on a regular basis by these seven newspapers are eligible to be selected.


Sierra League Player of the Year Chad Walling of Douglas was among four Tigers chosen in baseball. He was joined by fellow infielder Jimmy Pearce, pitcher-infielder Tyson Estes and catcher Roman Davis. Walling pitched as well for the Tigers. All were all-league first team choices.


Carson's entire infield of Kevin Schlange, Murph Gardner, Brooks Greenlee and Logan Parsley was chosen. Gardner, Greenlee and Parsley were all first-team choices. Schlange was an all-league second team choice who led the team with 35 RBI.


Galena, the Northern 4A runner-up, placed three players on the team. High Desert League Player of the Year Andrew Ferguson was joined by Tony Thompson and Eric Maupin.


In softball, Lauren Hoppe, Val Smith, Kellei Kizer and Kayla Dunn were all named to the team while Carson's Mandy Carvin, Liz Rankl and Dacey Hassey were selected. For the complete listing of the all-Sierra Nevada baseball and softball teams, see B2.




Baseball


Chad Walling, Douglas - Sierra League Player of the Year was a 7-3 as a pitcher and a versatile infielder


Tyson Estes, Douglas - All-Sierra League first team, Estes went 9-2 as a pitcher this season.


Roman Davis, Douglas - All-league first team, was an excellent defensive catcher.


Jimmy Pierce, Douglas - All-league first team infielder.


Murph Gardner, Carson - All-league first team, hit .400 (40-for-100) with 34 RBI.


Logan Parsley, Carson - All-league first team, hit .447 (38-for-85) with 28 RBI and a .544 on base percentage. Parsley struck out only six times in 108 plate appearances.


Kevin Schlange, Carson - An all-league second team pick, Schlange hit .370 (40-for-108) and led the team with 35 RBI.


Brooks Greenlee, Carson - All-league first team, Greenlee hit over .300 in league. Greenlee provided one of the highlights of the season for the Senators with a game-winning two-run single in a 4-3 win against Wooster.


Tony Thompson, Galena - All-league first team. Eric Maupin, Galena - All-league first team..


Andrew Ferguson, Galena - High Desert League Player of the Year.


Casey Bisard, Fernley - Bisard hit .390 (23-for-59) with eight home runs, 29 RBI, a .533 on base percentage and an .864 slugging percentage.


Travis Wood, Dayton - All 3A State second team outfielder who hit .414. He was Dayton's No. 1 pitcher with a 4-1 record, 1.59 ERA and just 12 walks in league.


Ryan Lane, North Tahoe - All 3A State first team during a season in which he hit .458 with seven homers, 15 doubles, 43 RBIs and a .794 slugging percentage, plus he pitched in 15 games with an 8-3 record, 2.03 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 72 innings.


Kevin Embertson, Truckee - All 3A State first team, Embertson had a 1.67 earned run average overall and in league went 5-2 with 49 strikeouts in 53 innings.


Jimmy Williams, Truckee - All 3A State first team. Williams hit .428 with 13 stolen bases and 28 hits.

Softball


Lauren Hoppe, Douglas - All-league first team as an outfielder.


Kellei Kizer, Douglas - Named to the All-Sierra Nevada sports writers all-North first team.


Kayla Dunn, Douglas - All-league first team, Dunn finished as the state's all-time career leader in RBI and second all-time in home runs, despite missing much of the year due to an injury. Will attend Georgia Tech.


Valerie Smith, Douglas - All-league first team, Smith carried the team offensively for much of the year, hitting over .500. She will attend Columbia.


Mandy Carvin, Carson - All-league first team as a pitcher.


Liz Rankl, Carson - All-league first team as a shortstop.


Dacey Hassey, Carson - All-league second team as a catcher.


Megan Molinari, Galena - Named to the all-High Desert League first team and to the Sierra Nevada sportswriters all-North first team.


Danelle Moropolous, Galena - Named to the Sierra Nevada sports writers all-North first team.


Nicole Greer, Dayton - Has received a scholarship offer from Division II Kentucky Wesleyan. Overall this year, Greer pitched 127.1 innings and had an outstanding strikeout to walk ratio of 143-12. She finished 10-10 with a 2.47 earned run average. She also hit .371 with a .500 on base percentage, a .532 slugging percentage, eight doubles, 1 triple and a team-high 13 RBI.


In Northern 3A play, Greer pitched 94 of 101 innings, finishing with 111 strikeouts and nine walks. She had a 2.61 E.R.A. and held opponents to a .184 average. She hit .366 with a .509 on base percentage, .585 slugging percentage, seven doubles and one triple.


Heather Matthews, Fernley - Matthews went 9-7 with a 1.30 earned run average and hit .300 with 12 RBI and a 700 slugging percentage.


Anna Kingman, Whittell - She batted .600 with 15 RBI in the Northern 2A. She was the Northern 2A MVP in 2004 and the co-MVP this season. She helped lead Whittell to within one game of the state tournament this season.


She had an extra base hit in every league game but one and had an RBI in every league game this season.


Julie Rohrback, Truckee - 3A State co-MVP, Rohrback hit .643 (36-for-56) with 31 runs, nine doubles, three triples, 23 RBI and 23 stolen bases.
