High school students' prom dreams come true, thanks to you

I am always surprised how wonderful our town is. Every time I think it can't get better, we come together and make a bigger difference.

I recently had the great pleasure of helping four seniors at Carson and Pioneer high schools. The students attended their senior proms with dates and all the frills. I want to thank each individual who dropped off a prom dress and allowed so many young ladies an opportunity to look beautiful on their prom night.

Thank you to Teri and Kathy at Sugar Pine Cove for doing all the flowers. They were gorgeous. And to Mark Frady from Mercury Cleaners, who made sure all the young men were stylin' in their tuxedos. Thank you to Jeff Creelman, who donated a very sharp tuxedo, which I have never thought of asking for. So next year I'll take those, too.

I received a letter from one of the couples thanking me. I am very thankful to each of you in the community who allowed me the opportunity to help these very deserving students with a night they will always remember. Each was thrilled by the generosity that someone actually cared enough to help out with tuxedos, flowers, shoes, tickets, dinner, photos and so much more. It was great, and from all the students who attended, please know they were all very thankful and overwhelmed by the kindness.

The Salvation Army has a summer day camp starting soon for children ages 6 to 12. The camp is packed with daily activities and field trips. If you are wondering what to do with the children once they are out of school and you're still at work, sign them up for "Fun in the Son" day camp.

T he Taste of Downtown is the event you have been waiting for, and the tickets are on sale now. Lisa Lee, director of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, has the market on a great time. The money raised helps so many women who deal with the silent struggle of domestic violence.

I have worked side by side with Lisa and the ladies in her office, and they are all angels when handling the women who come to the shelter. The compassion, kindness and direction they provide to those going through the turmoil and aftermath of domestic violence is amazing.

Tickets are on sale at the Sugar Pine Cove, next to Red's 395, and Classy Seconds on Hot Springs Road. Get them early before they are gone

Taste of Downtown

When: June 18. Tasting is 5:30 Ð9 p.m. with entertainment until midnight. Nine bands and 27 restaurants will be participating.

Where: Starting at North Carson at Silvana's Italian Cuisine and wandering down to the Re-Bar at the Carson Mall. Two trolleys will transport ticket holders who need a ride.

T he Carson-Tahoe Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop will hold its annual yard sale Friday. The event includes many items from the auxiliary gift shop, which has gifts for everyone from babies to seniors. All merchandise is new and will be 50 percent off the marked price, with proceeds benefiting the hospital.
