Fiddle contest returning to Mills Park Rendezvous

The Old-Time Fiddle Contest is coming back to Carson City with fiddle champion Randy Pollard at the helm. The contest will be the main event at this year's Rendezvous, which runs Friday through Sunday in Mills Park.

The 2005 Rendezvous will mark the first fiddling showdown in the capital in 25 years and will showcase the talents of fiddlers under the age of 8 all the way up to seasoned fiddlers 55 and over.

Coordinated by Pollard, who twice earned the title "Grand Masters Champion" in Nashville and is a five-time California State Champion and as a four-time Nevada State Champion, the contest is expected to be a huge draw for fiddlers from across the nation.

Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, the contest will last until the last bow has been drawn, expected to be well into the evening. Each contestant will play a 3-minute set consisting of a hoe-down, a waltz and a song of their choosing.

Children's author to read, sign books

Westside Ink - Books, Art, Pie, will host a book signing at noon Saturday at 710 N. Curry St.

Ryan Cunningham, author of "A Gray, Gray World," a children's book, will read or children's story-time at 11:30 a.m., then will be signing books until 3 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

Volunteers sought for Clear Creek Canyon cleanup

Volunteers are needed for a Clear Creek cleanup from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Meet at Fuji Park near the arena. T-shirts, water and lunch will be provided.

The cleanup is sponsored by the Clear Creek Watershed Council and Western Nevada RC&D. For information, call 720-0162.

Museum celebrating class of 1955

The Carson Valley Museum on highway 395 will celebrate the Douglas High School class of 1955 on Saturday during Carson Valley Day.

With prepaid admission, any person may have a space to park and a place to put his or her chair on the lawn to watch the parade. The museum will have classic cars in the back and play music from the 1950s.

Inside, the museum will feature a special exhibit highlighting the class of 1955 that people may see after the parade. Coffee and Danish rolls will be available for alumni from 1955 or anyone dressed in appropriate high school attire.

The museum will park cars at 7:30 a.m. before the road is closed for the parade. Stop by the museum to pick up registration forms or call 782-2555 for information.

Library open during construction of new children's center

A new children's resource center is under way at the Douglas County Public Library. Construction begins Monday. There will be a storytime room, a homework center, new shelving, new furniture, and new carpeting when the project is completed.

Preparations have already begun at the library. Popular titles and a broad spectrum of materials will remain available during the project. Other materials can be ordered from the Lake Tahoe Branch. Patrons checking out children's books belonging to Minden Library will have a longer than usual check-out period.

The majority of the materials will be due Aug. 1. Juvenile audio books and videos will be moved into the regular collection so they will be available during the entire project. The audiovisual material and Lake Tahoe materials will have normal check-out periods. Library staff is available to assist patrons locate materials.

The summer reading program will be offered as usual. The library will not be taking book donations until Aug. 15.

Virginia City Highlands

'Pre-Disaster' workshop to be offered Saturday

A free "Pre-Disaster" workshop will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Virginia City Highlands Fire Station. Anyone interested in helping to evacuate animals during a local emergency should attend.

Topics will include basic fire knowledge, evacuation procedures, what to bring, forms and booklets, hands-on demonstration and instructions, basic first aid, trailer safety and small and large animal handling. Volunteers are needed for administrative positions and hands-on animal evacuation.

Attendance is open to residents of Storey, Lyon, Washoe, Carson and Douglas counties and volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
