Carson City

National Guard celebrates Flag Day

The public is welcome to join the Nevada National Guard in paying tribute to the U.S. flag in the annual Flag Day Ceremony set for 10 a.m. today at the Veterans Wall on the Capitol Grounds.

Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira, a veteran of the Air Force, is scheduled to speak.

Army Guard Col. Felix Castagnola will also give a speech celebrating the 230th birthday of the U.S. Army.

Also, a static display of numerous historical U.S. flags will also be at the event.

The ceremony is free.

The Carson City U.S. Army recruiting station will provide an Army birthday cake.

Pow-Wow planned for Father's Day

The Stewart Father's Day Pow-Wow will be Saturday at the former Stewart Indian School campus.

There will be competition dancing, Stewart alumni events, Native arts and crafts, Native food, drum groups and a boxing exhibition, just to name a few of the activities.

Grand entry times are 7 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. All are invited and welcome to attend this free event. For information, call Sherry Rupert 687-8333.

Human Resource Association to meet

The Sierra Nevada Human Resource Association will meet Thursday at the Casino Fandango HR office.

Continental breakfast is from 7:30-8 a.m. and the program from 8-9 a.m.

Anthony Hall from the law firm of Littler Mendelson, will present an informative update on the FLSA.

No-host dinner for business owners

The Mound House Business Association will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the Old Time Café, 10196 Highway 50 E.

This will be a no-host dinner.

Washoe Valley

Santikaro to lead Buddhist retreat

Santikaro will lead a retreat Saturday and Sunday at Washoe Pines Ranch in Washoe Valley.

Dharma Zephyr Sangha is hosting the retreat from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Santikaro lived and studied for 20 years in Thailand with Dhamma Master Ajahn Buddhadasa. He travels to Nevada from Chicago, where he has established a Dhamma community for lay practitioners.

Saturday focuses on mindfulness with breathing and is especially suited for beginning meditators. Sunday, methods for a deeper study of Dharma will take place.

A suggested registration donation is $20 for one day and $30 for both days. Registration helps cover the cost of presenting the retreat. The teachings are always offered freely. Donations for the teacher are given in appreciation.

California

Military camp available for youth

The Devil Pups are looking for a few teens, both male and female, for the encampment at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Teens age 14 and 18 may qualify for a 10-day stay at the mini boot camp from Aug. 3-13.

This camp is to give students a taste of military life and help develop leadership skills.
