Computer training available at library

Carson City Library Reference Librarian Susan Antipa offers an introduction on using a Web browser, "A Primer on Searching the World Wide Web," the first Tuesday of each month, at 7 p.m., in the Library auditorium.

The class is recommended for novice Web users, however e-mail and chat rooms are not covered. For information call 887-2244.

The Carson City Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The library is at 900 N. Roop St., the corner of Roop and Washington streets.

Mayors held for ransom for blood

Reno, Sparks and Carson City mayors will come together today to help increase the local blood supply. Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, Sparks Mayor Geno Martini and Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira have agreed to be incarcerated and held for ransom at their local blood banks. Come join the fun and donate blood to free your mayor from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. today. Mayor Teixeira will be at United Blood Services in Carson City from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The Horseshoe Club is donating sandwiches and salads. Five $10 certificates will be raffled off for the Basil Restaurant that day only. All donors will also be entered into a drawing for a four-day, three-night Carnival cruise and a ticket to see this year's Reno-Tahoe Open.

Virginia City

Bagpipe band to play at Piper's July 4

The Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band will appear at Virginia City's historic Piper's Opera House at 2 p.m. July 4. The performance, featuring traditional highland bagpipes and drums, follows the band's march through the mining town during its midday Independence Day Parade.

The Reno-based organization has performed and competed at events throughout the West, and for most of its 44 years has served as Nevada's only pipe band.

The band continues a Nevada tradition dating back to 1864 and Virginia City's Bonanza period, with the state's first celebration of the birthday of Scotland's Poet Laureate Robert Burns.

On Aug. 13, the Sierra Highlanders will become the first Nevada representative to compete at the prestigious Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association's World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow, Scotland.

While in Scotland, the Highlanders will also compete at Highland games in Perth, Rothesay and Crieff.

This will be the Sierra Highlanders' third appearance at Piper's Opera House.

Proceeds from the performance will go toward the band's Scotland trip with part to benefit the historic Virginia City theater, which is operated by a nonprofit foundation.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance.

General seating is $10 with $5 for 5-16 year olds.

Limited box seats may be purchased for $25.

Sign up now for summer youth theater classes

Douglas County Children's Theater is offering classes for students ages 6-18, designed to teach all aspects of a theatrical production in a creative and fun atmosphere.

Students will present an adaptation of "Aladdin" in September.

"Aladdin" has lots of roles, big and small, for ages 6 through 17. No experience is required and everyone will be cast in the show.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays July 5 through Sept. 15, no class July 22-Aug. 8. Auditions for "Aladdin" will be held the first week of class.

Each participant will receive a minimum of 36 hours of training in singing, acting and dancing. Performances will be Sept. 9, 10, 16 and 17.

Cost is $40 for the eight-week course and will be at the Dance Work Shop, 1697 County Road in Minden.

Pre-registration is required and can be done at the Recreation Department, 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.

St. Gall accepting donations for annual rummage sale

Donations will be accepted starting July 5 for St. Gall's annual Rummage Sale in August.

Drop off items from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at the Pastoral Center next to the church, 1343 Centerville Lane.

Remember - all items are tax deductible - so if you want to get rid of that boat, RV, vehicle or horse trailer, now is the time.
