Carson City

Golf license plate available today

A new Nevada Commission on Tourism specialty license plate that features an emerald green golf course framed by purple mountain peaks is designed to promote the state's diverse recreational attractions while also generating funds to build tourism in rural communities.

The plate, which is a first for state tourism, will be available for purchase today for $61, of which $25 goes to support tourism-building projects in rural Nevada. It features the NCOT Web site, http://www.travelnevada.com at the bottom of the plate.

Funds received from the plates will be awarded to communities through a rural tourism development grant program established by legislation several years ago. Counties, cities and local and regional organizations receive funds to build projects that develop and improve tourism in the community.

Lyon County

Coupons available for produce for seniors

For the third year, Nevada has received funding from the USDA Food and Nutrition Program to provide coupons for fresh fruit and vegetables to Lyon County seniors 60 years of age and older, whose annual income does not exceed $17,705 for an individual or $23,836 for a couple.

There will be one distribution as follows:

Silver Springs Senior Center, 1-3 p.m. Tuesday; Dayton Senior Center, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday and Fernley Senior Center, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday.

The booklet contains 15 $2 coupons for a total of $30 toward fresh fruits and vegetables. Participating farmers market dates, places and times will be available when the coupon booklets are distributed.

The coupons may not be redeemed until July 15. If you are eligible, bring your picture ID to the distribution sites listed to sign-up and receive your coupon booklets. If you cannot attend, a friend may pick up your coupons with a signed note and your picture ID.

Virginia City

Historic society meeting at Beebe Cleg Mansion in VC

The Carson City Historical Society will hold a membership meeting at 2 p.m. July 10 in Virginia City. Members Sue and Roy Richey are offering the use of their historic home, the Beebe Cleg Mansion, for this event, which is an opportunity to become better acquainted with new members and encourage all lovers of history that may be interested in joining the society to learn more.

Andrea Daley, representative of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will be the guest speaker. She will enlighten us all on "Café' Society in Virginia City."

Society member Fred Stanio will make an appearance as the legendary stage driver Hank Monk and talk about the Carson City to Placerville stage route and his perceived involvement in it. His fastest ride from Virginia City to the Ormsby House, 17 miles in one hour, 8 minutes, was twice the speed of a normal stage and three times faster than a train. Come and learn more of this fascinating bit of our history.

Bring a lawn chair. Refreshments will be served.
