Osborne trying to make comeback with Arizona

Donovan Osborne is at it again.

The 1987 Carson High graduate is trying to make another comeback and as a result he may have been part of an event that has never happened before on Wednesday: Three Carson Country area pitchers all seeing action in the same Spring Training baseball game.

Osborne, 1996 Carson High graduate Dusty Bergman, and 1991 Douglas High graduate Shawn Estes all pitched in Wednesday's game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Angels' split squad team. The Angels won 16-2.

Major League teams are always in need of left-handed pitchers, so the Arizona Diamondbacks brought the left-handed Osborne to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. It's believed that if Osborne has a strong spring, he could make the club as a second left-handed relief pitcher.

Osborne pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1992-1999, posting his best season in 1996 when he went 13-9 with a 3.53 earned run average. He made his first attempted comeback with the Chicago Cubs in 2002. He pitched briefly for the Cubs that season, but a hip injury effectively ended his season in May.

After the Cubs released him, Osborne reported to the New York Mets for Spring Training in 2003, but the Mets released him before the season began. In 2004, Osborne made the New York Yankees roster, but again was released after posting a 2-0 record with a 7.13 earned run average. For his Major League career, Osborne has a 49-46 record with a 4.03 E.R.A.

He made his second appearance on Wednesday. Osborne had a solid outing in his first appearance, not allowing a run in one inning while striking out two. But he was roughed up on Wednesday, allowing five earned runs in one inning.

Bergman had a solid outing in his third appearance of the spring for the Angels, not allowing a run in one inning. In his first appearance, Bergman struck out the only batter he faced, then gave up two runs in one inning in his next outing.

Estes had a rough outing on Wednesday in starting for Arizona. After retiring the first two batters, Estes allowed five runs in the first inning before coming back to shut out the Angels over the next two innings.
