Barbara Perkins, Lauren Metcalf, Sam Forbes, Andrew Cardinal and John Wandel won two individual events each to help the Carson High School sweep its season-open swimming and diving dual meet at home against Spanish Springs on Saturday.

Carson's boys won 190-59 and the girls won 187-121 at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

A moment of silence was held before the meet in memory of longtime official Charles Keller, who passed away on Friday morning. Keller, the principal of Pioneer and Opportunity High Schools, served as the first president of the Northern Nevada Officials Association for swimming, a post he held from 1998 until he stepped down in January.

Among the highlights for Carson was Forbes, a junior exchange student from Australia who logged victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 10.73 seconds) and 100 butterfly (57.71). He also combined with Matt Grunert, Cardinal and Wandel to win the 200 medley (1:48.67) and 400 freestyle (3:36.42) relays.

Cardinal led the way as Carson swept the top three places in both the 100 and 200 freestyle races. Cardinal won the 100 in 54.21, ahead of Kellen Dale and Charles Hanselman, and he won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.32, ahead of Ian Murdock and Mack Malikowski.

Wandel was a winner in the 50 freestyle (23.73) and the 100 backstroke. Wandel led Carson's sweep of the top four places in the 50 in which Hanselman took second, Garrett Clayton third and Malikowski fourth.

Grunert won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.67) and also placed second in the 200 I.M.

John Wandel, Sam Ballard and Alex Updegrove took the top three spots in the 100 backstroke for Carson.

Murdock and Scott Wandel went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle. Murdock won in 5:35.56.

Scott Wandel, Dale, Ballard and Clayton combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.13. The Senators also took second-place in the relay as the team of Ahron Osheroff, Murdock, Malikowski and Hanselman logged a time of 1:51.38.

Dale, Murdock, Clayton and Malikowski also placed second in the 400 relay.

In the girls competition, Metcalf won the 500 freestyle (5:21.75) and 200 I.M. (2:19.98). She also swam legs for Carson's winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Sarah Metcalf, Rebekah Niehoff, Danielle Judge and Lauren Metcalf won the 400 in 4:03.96. Katie Wandel, Jessica Goddard and the Metcalf sisters won the 200 in 2:01.14.

Hilary Schlager, Niehoff, Wandel and Goddard also combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.35.

Perkins was a double winner in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Schlager won the 100 breaststroke, while Wandel and Goddard went 1- in the 50 freestyle.

Carson also swept the top two places in the girls diving with Milan DelVecchio and Rachel Neitz.

The Senators return to action with a dual meet against Douglas this week. The diving will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Carson Valley Swim Center in Minden, while the swimming portion of the meet is scheduled to be held on Saturday.
