Ides of March good day to wear your work toga

It's "Wear Your Togas to Work" Day (or sheets, if you don't have a toga) ... 'tis the Ides of March, the day when Julius Caesar's "friends," Cassie and Bruce (updated for today's readers) done him in ... "Et tu, Brute?" he said, as they poked holes in him (that translates to, "You too, Brewsky, you dirty, rotten little &*#@!!"). No doubt the saying, "With friends like that, who needs enemies?"stems from them.

Then, if you haven't had enough, Thursday is St. Paddy's Day and you can go to work as a leprechaun ... or, if that doesn't strike your fancy ... the vernal equinox is upon us on Palm Sunday and you can be a dancing Druid or a Christian waving palms ... so many exciting choices ...

Wanted: Short charcoal gray wool jacket belonging to Carolyn and left in the Assembly on Thursday ... zips up the front ... if seen, return to Nevada Appeal with note telling her not to forget it again. And speaking of coats ... has anyone seen Peter L. Coates lately? Call us Pete, we've got hot news for you ...

"Arts Day" at the Legislature last Thursday was great fun ... Maizie sat with the very nice Sen. Dean Rhoads, R-Tuscarora, ... while Sen. Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, made some lovely remarks about her family. Carolyn sat in Assemblyman Harry Mortenson's, D-Las Vegas, seat (he was ill ... we hope he's better soon ... the thought of her voting in his place is downright scary). Then we went to lunch at the Nugget where the marvelous student mariachi band from Las Vegas was playing for us.

We had the good fortune to sit with Assemblymen Scott Sibley, R-Henderson, and Mo Denis, D-Las Vegas, Terry Ozawa, Pat Josten and Terry Ward (who got to sit with Bonnie Parnell, D-Carson City) during the morning session) ... we were all on our best behavior, nobody dribbled down their fronts, nor did they say or do anything that would cause a legislative brouhaha ... and while we had a grand time, would the Legislature get more done if they ignored the introductions and "hoopla," and stuck with the business at hand? Just wondering ...

The new "in and out" hospital has opened up north of town ... a lovely facility ... (actually you can stay more than a day now) ... and Carson Tahoe-Hospital's labor and delivery nurse "Carol G" is a fan ... thanks ... by the way, do any of the medical community know how to sleep with a sling? Maizie is still wondering how it's done ...

Observation ... if you're going to have a "comb-over" ... at least glue it down ... 'tain't purty flying around in the wind ... looks like a billiard ball with a sail attached ...

"Kinneygarten" ... a KOLO anchor said it twice during a recent broadcast ... get a dictionary (or Dan Tecca will loan you his ... it's an "inside" joke ... he doesn't use the words incorrectly ... he just looks up the ones he thinks we made up) ...

Steve Tackes, local attorney, wants us to be funnier ... so ... in his honor: "Bambi, (no doubt a classmate of Steve's), in her 14th year of law school, was in her government class when the professor asked if she knew what Roe vs. Wade was about. Bambi pondered the question, then finally said, "That was the decision George Washington had to make before he crossed the Delaware." If we recall, Steve's GPA was a bit higher than hers ... ("first I cudunt spel loyer, now I are one") ...

To all the stores in and around Carson City ... if you put in a few chairs for customers ... they'd stay longer and shop more ... think about it ...

The Oscar ratings were down again this year ... is it any wonder? You're watching people in expensive gowns and millions of dollars in jewelry fawning all over each other, while millions of people are in dire straights because of poverty, catastrophe and despotic governments ... according to Jim Gibbons, we're "communists" if we think that's wrong ... NOT ... we just think the money spent on self-aggrandizement would be better spent on humanitarian projects ... and make the programs less glitzy and funnier ...

On death and dying ... "A minister (no doubt, Father Jeff of St Peter's ... we are equal opportunity religious name droppers) was walking along the sidewalk in front of the church, when he heard the intoning of a prayer ... apparently some children had found a dead robin and were performing a "proper burial" for the bird. They had secured a small box, lined it with cotton, and dug a hole in the ground ... "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and into the hole he goes ... " Amen ...

The beautiful statue of Sarah Winnemucca has been unveiled in the Capitol in Washington, D.C. ... a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman and to all of the people who worked so hard to get her there ...

Sherry Hester sent us a couple of this week's jokes ... "Two nuns are out driving when a vampire drops onto the hood of their car ... "Quick, Sister," screams one nun, "show him your cross." The other nun leans out the window and yells, "Get the hell off our car, you dingbat ... "

For all high school and college athletes who think steroids are the "thing to do" ... think again ... gee, you'll have acne ... flabby fat and muscles when you go off them ... the good chance of dying early ... and a "certain appendage" will shrink to the size of your little finger and be about that useful ... hope you enjoy them ...

Top o' the week to you all ...
