'The Fantasticks' playing at WNCC

Don't forget that the Western Nevada Theatre Company's presentation of Broadway's longest running musical "The Fantasticks" continues this weekend. It's at the Western Nevada Community College's Marlette Hall, a change of venue that works just fine for this intimate show. Incidentally, if you've never visited the campus there, take a few extra minutes and look around. It's quite impressive.

ANY POETS OUT THERE?

Sure, there are the cowboy poets who appear around town all the time, but how about plain old poets? Well, if you've got a poem you're proud of, maybe you'd like to submit it to the International Library of Poetry contest. Nobody writes poetry for money anymore, but there's a pot of $58,000 to be divided among 250 winners this year.

Entry is free, but get your verse in no later than May 31. One original entry per person, any style or subject, no more than 20 lines with the author's name and address at the top of the page. Mail to International Library of Poetry, 1 Poetry Plaza, Owings Mills, MD 21117.

MEET THE AUTHOR/ARTIST

Stephen Trimble will be the guest at the Nevada State Museum March 24 to celebrate the showing of his works from his book "The Sagebrush Ocean." The exhibit is called "A Naturalist's Vision of the Great Basin" and is spread over the three new galleries. It's one of the best shows the museum has hosted in a long time, and it's a fine way to learn about the life around us.

DYLAN IN RENO

Bob Dylan brings his music to the Reno Hilton Pavilion at 8 p.m. Friday. Yep, it's a bit pricey at $71.50 and $49.50, but this is Dylan, the voice of several generations. Call 789-2285 if you can afford it and want to hear America's troubadour.

COMMA COFFEE DOINGS

Friday, things heat up at Comma Coffee with the group Noah's Dove entertaining from 7-8:30 in an evening of spiritual music and discussion. There's lots of that going around these days. Saturday, drop in for the open community drum circle. The thumping begins at 7 and continues to 11-ish.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

The Brooklyn Sax Quartet returns to the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. April 9. Last time this group played the Brewery, the music was very original and intriguing.

The quartet performs original compositions that unfold in episodes, change on the spot, and are funky, tough, raw, cross-cultural, intelligent and beautiful. Call 883-1976 and let them know you're coming.

ART SHOW EXTENDED

The exhibit of The Wynn Collection at the Nevada Museum of Art has been extended through April 10. Featuring 14 paintings from the collection of Steve and Elaine Wynn, the show has drawn record crowds to the NMA. Some really exceptional pictures are displayed, so if you enjoy such art, you've got a couple of extra weeks to make it to Reno. Highlights of the exhibition include Picasso's "Le Rêve (The Dream)" (1932) and Vincent van Gogh's "Peasant Woman Against a Background of Wheat" (1890).

The museum is at 160 W. Liberty St. in downtown Reno. Galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., late on Thursdays until 8 p.m. Admission is free for NMA members; $10 adults, $8 students/seniors. Call 329-3333.
