Fernley second, Dayton fourth in golf

Fernley High looks to be well on its way to earning an NIAA 3A State Tournament berth in boys golf and Dayton may join the Vaqueros.


The Vaqueros took second and the Dust Devils took fourth in a tournament hosted by Dayton at Dayton Valley Golf Club on Thursday. Lowry won the event with a score of 418 and was followed by Fernley at 423.


Hawthorne took third with a 432 and Dayton was fourth with a 441. But Hawthorne is a 2A school, so Dayton took third among the 3A teams. Three Northern 3A teams will advance to state.


Yerington's Ryan Rife and Dayton's Kevin Goles posted the lowest Lyon County scores as both finished at 2-over-par 74. Rife was awarded second and Goles third based on the handicap tiebreaker. Sparks' Craig Wenzel was the low score medalist with a 69.


For Fernley, Brandon Dalton shot a 77, Matt Leestma fired a 78, Kevin Leestma had an 84, Jesse Turner shot an 88, Colton Keever had a 96 and Trevor Barker added a 100.


For Dayton Shane Castro shot an 80, Trent Wood had a 93, Lyle McDougal fired a 95, Danny Hopper had a 99 and Brian Janas added a 106. For yerington, David Whalin had a 107, Marcus Kress had a 109, Jeff Falstone fired a 110 and Uriah Valentine and Juan Rodriguez each shot a 124.
