Carson athletes compete at Stanford Invitational

Carson High's Matt Moore turned a top-10 time in the boys 110-meter prelims and Galena's Dan Geib ran to third-place in the boys 3,000-meter finals to provide local highlights on the opening day of the 31st annual Stanford Track and Field Invitational on Friday.


The two-day meet, which concludes today, has attracted some 4,000 collegiate and high school athletes from across the nation to Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field.


Moore ran 15.38 seconds in the 110 highs, the eighth fastest time in the prelims, to advance to the finals today. Geib ran 8:42.47 in the 3,000 to place third in a race won by California's top-ranked two-miler, Yosef Ghebray of James Logan (8:21.74).


Other Carson performances on Friday included Stephen Waicul's 16th-place in the boys shot put (47-9 1/2) and Alex McAlman's 28th in the girls shot put (31-11). Freshman Christy Works finished 29th with a time of 11:00.21 in the girls 3,000, a race won by Reno High sophomore Marie Lawrence (9:47.63). Carson sophomore Andrea Kierstead was 19th in the girls 100-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 17.04 and freshman Kayla Sanchez 21st in the girls 100 (13.0).


Another Northern Nevada athlete who fared well on Friday was Smith Valley's Jordan Savidge, who placed fourth in the boys pole vault with a 15-6 clearance. Smith Valley teammate Sam Marshek cleared 14-6 to place seventh.


Despite not being at full strength in preparation for Stanford, the Carson girls also won the Outer Relays in Fallon on Thursday. Carson finished with 108 points while Fallon was second with 94 points.


On the boys side, even though Carson wasn't at full strength, it finished third with 69 points. Fallon won with 99 points and Spanish Springs was second with 71. Top local performances were:

High jump - Douglas, first, 17-2; Fernley, second, 14-8. Pole vault - Carson, third, 19-0. Discus - Carson, second, 372-6.
