Carson softball beats Reed

SPARKS - Carson High's softball team split its two games at the annual Reed Easter Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Shadow Mountain Softball Complex.

Carson concluded pool play with a 2-1 upset of Reed, and then dropped a 10-1 decision to Livermore in the first round of the single-elimination winner's bracket.

In the win over Reed, the Senators rode the slender right arm of Mandy Carvin and the bat of Dacey Hassey.

Hassey gave the Senators a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the second, and then she drove in Christa Casci with a single in the sixth to make it 2-0.

Reed cut the lead to 2-1 with a single run in the sixth, and got the tying run to second before Carvin retired the last two hitters to end the game. Carvin fanned six and walked two, and allowed three hits.

"She threw great," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "She got into a little trouble in the seventh. She mixed up her pitches and kept them off balance with her change-up. Reed is a quality team, and we played great ball."

Carvin and the Senators ran out of gas against Livermore.

Carvin allowed five runs in three innings before giving way to Casci, who gave up five runs in the fourth. The game was stopped on the seven-run rule.

"She was getting a little tired," Vickrey said of Carvin. "Livermore has some sticks. Their pitcher located her pitches well."

Carson only got two hits in the game, both by Hassey. The sophomore catcher tripled home a run to make it 5-1 before Livermore exploded in the fourth inning.

"It was Liz's (Rankl) day yesterday," Vickrey said. "It was Dacey's day today. She did a nice job at the plate."
