Sanchez leads Senators at Stanford invite

Matt Moore ran to fourth-place in the boys 400-meter intermediate hurdles and Kayla Sanchez placed sixth in the girls finals on Saturday to provide the best finishes for Carson High School during the 31st annual Stanford Invitational track and field meet.

Moore, a senior, clocked a strong time of 56.15 seconds to place third in his heat and fourth overall in the high school competition in a meet that attracted collegiate, open and high school athletes from across the nation. Teammate Seth Carter also ran 58.98 to place fifth in the heat and eighth overall in the event.

Sanchez, a freshman, ran 1:10.06 in the girls race to place sixth. Megan Olivetti, running for Galena, placed second in the race at 66.31.

Four other Carson athletes cracked the top 10 during the final day of the meet held at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field: Alex McAlman eighth in the girls discus with a throw of 116-3, Stephen Waicul ninth in the boys discus (151-5), Matt Moore ninth in the 110 high hurdles (15.67) and Tilor Smith 10th in the long jump (20-8 1/2).

Also for Galena, Dan Geib placed eighth in the boys mile (4:25.41) and Lydia Mailander eighth in the triple jump (35-7 1/4).

Two other Northern Nevada standouts in the high school finals were Smith Valley's Jordan Savidge and Sam Marshek, who placed second and fifth respectively in the boys pole vault with respective marks of 15-6 and 14-6.

Notes: Nevada's Sarah Woydziak placed third in the college women's hammer throw with a mark of 178-8. Her brother, Luke Woydziak, won the men's hammer throw for the Pacific Bay Club with a 213-10. Luke Woydziak was a finalist in the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer in Sacramento. ... Caitlin Prunty, formerly of Carson High and Eastern Washington University, placed third in her heat of the women's 1,500-meter run with a 4:31.08 clocking.
