Engan takes second at Far Westerns

Jamie Engan took second in the 100-yard freestyle and Kevin Dyer was third in the 1,650 free to lead another solid effort by the Carson Tigersharks swim club at the Far Western Championships on Friday in Morgan Hill, Calif.


In 15 and older girls, Engan qualified third in 54.23 seconds. She came back to lower her time to 52.96 to take second in the finals.


In the 13-14 boys 1,650 free, Dyer was third in 16:41.63. Also for the Tigersharks, Abby Niehoff was sixth in the 13-14 girls 100 free in 54.39.


In addition, Dyer was 19th in the 100 free in 52.18 and 19th in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.55. In the 9-10 girls 50 back, Jessica Fahrenbruch was 33rd in 37.60 and in the 13-14 girls 200 back, Samantha Ashmore was 50th in 2:21.41.


Tigershark coach Jim Puleo said his team swam well in cold and windy conditions in the outdoor pool. "I think the kids swam real well," Puleo said. "They're racing well."
