"Our God reigns, no matter how you spell it," proclaimed Rev. Pat Propster at Thursday's 54th annual National Day of Prayer observed at the state Capitol.
This year's theme was "God shed His grace on thee."
The light rain stopped shortly after inspirational music began. With music ministry from First Christian Church and Silver Hills Community Church, the crowd of about 120 people joined in chorus to "God of Wonders." As the music ended, "God Bless America" could be heard coming from carillons at the Paul Laxalt State Building.
"We pray that today is a springboard day to pray for this nation ever after," Propster said.
Rev. Stan Friend read the presidential proclamation, State Treasurer Brian Krolicki read Gov. Guinn's proclamation and Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira read his own proclamation.
Praying for the nation was Rev. Ken Haskins; Rev. John Wiltse prayed for the state of Nevada and Rev. Chuck Nichter prayed for Carson City and its communities.
Krolicki addressed the crowd on behalf of the governor and the state, and noted that with 30 days remaining in the 120-day legislative session, "We're going to need all the prayers we can get."
Rose Feltner of Carson City and her two sons, William, 15, and David, 12, said it was a privilege to attend.
"I feel this is wonderful being able to gather here with everyone," Feltner said.
"I want to thank the clergy who carry on this mission (of prayer) every day," said Sen. Mark Amodei. "It's a privilege to be a part of this.
"And remember today is Cinco de Mayo, and an anniversary of the Holocaust remembrance."
Rev. Louie Locke Sr. closed the afternoon of prayer by asking for everyone to continue praying for the nation.
"Our nation is tremendously blessed," he said. "But our nation is also in a time of need."
Propster said this year he reached out to several community businesses and invited them to participate.
"We had Madeline's Cookies, Raley's, Maytan Music and Service Flags with us today. I'm stoked with how this turned out this year. God bless America."
