Galena wins; CHS softball eliminated

The Galena High baseball team secured the High Desert League's No. 1 seed into the Northern 4A playoffs with a 5-2 win over McQueen on Saturday at home.


Galena (19-10, 18-3) will open the playoffs on Wednesday against Carson. Freshman Jacob Anderson pitched six scoreless innings for the Grizzlies. McQueen closed to 5-2 in the seventh inning, but Ryan Locke came in to record the last out for the save.


Jordan Arnold went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Andrew Ferguson was 1-for-2, Tony Thompson and Jake Hess each had a double and an RBI and Eric Maupin doubled.


DAYTON BASEBALL ALIVE


The Dayton High baseball team kept its Northern 3A playoff hopes alive by sweeping Yerington 9-3 and 8-1.


Fernley, Truckee and Dayton all finished tied for the fourth and final spot into the playoffs at 9-7 in league. Dayton eliminated Yerington from the playoff race as the Lions finished at 8-8. As of press time, the team that advanced to the playoffs hadn't been determined under the tiebreaker procude.


Joe Delaski had a huge day to help keep Dayton's playoff hopes alive. Delaski had two doubles and an RBI in the opener and was 3-for-3 with three RBI and a double in the nightcap. Delaski was also the winning pitcher in the second game, scattering eight hits in going the distance and not walking a batter.


Travis Wood went the distance in the opener, allowing six hits and not walking a hitter. In the opener Matt Horback was 3-for-3 with four RBI, Kyle Yoder went 2-for-4 and Wood was 1-for-2 with two RBI. In the nightcap, Tom O'Brien was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Wood went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jayce Dillie went 2-for-3 with two RBI.


CHS SOFTBALL ELIMINATED


The Wooster softball team split its regular-season ending doubleheader with Reno High to gain the last berth into the Northern 4A playoffs from the Sierra League and eliminate Carson in the process. Wooster ended up 7-8 in league play to finish fourth in league while the Senators finished at 6-9.


DAYTON SOFTBALL SWEEPS


Nicole Greer ended a brilliant career with two shutout wins as the Dayton softball team swept Yerington, winning the opener 6-0 and the nightcap 10-0 in five innings.


Greer pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 with one walk in the opener and threw another two-hitter and struck out seven in the nightcap. In the opener, Sierra Barnwell had a hit and a run, Brittany Hill had a hit, a run and an RBI and Sara Simmons had a double and an RBI.


In the nightcap, Barnwell had a hit, run and RBI, Melony Cox went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Greer had a double and two runs and Lauren Fisher and Bailey Garcia each added a hit for Dayton (9-12, 8-8), which failed to qualify for the Northern 3A playoffs.
