Eric Swain, a Carson City product who coached the Reno High boys basketball team to Sierra League championships the past two seasons, was named head coach of the program at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif., on Thursday.

Swain coached Reno to a 19-10 this past season and 18-10 in 2003-04. Previously, he guided McQueen to two league championships before he made the move to Reno.

"This was just an opportunity I couldn't pass up," said Swain, a 1983 Carson High graduate. "From what I've found, and I've done research and I've gone down there to visit, Clovis is a school district and community that's committed to the kids."

A little over a month ago, Craig Campbell resigned as head girls basketball coach at Reno High and accepted a job at Clovis West.

Swain is familiar with yet another Clovis West coach, Tom Orlich, who formerly coached at South Tahoe.

So, is this a chance to renew an old rivalry with Orlich? Well, no, but Swain jokingly admitted he had another incentive.

"This is a chance for me to get out of town while I can still say I've never lost to Bruce," Swain said with a laugh, referring to Carson coach Bruce Barnes, who is also a 1983 Carson High graduate.
