Some strange names and even stranger sayings

We asked for strange names and sayings that families come up with and received some goodies back ... "Mellida" was the result of Melvin and Ida put together for a girl's name in one lady's family ... and another family had Aunts Chicken, Coonie and Chew (who are still with us), and Tuffy, Micky and Zeen (who are not).

Her mother was Bernie (aka Hank) and her sister is Frogtail Rae (all this from someone named "Scream") ... simply delightful, but the "informer's" name is being withheld to protect her from her sister.

As for sayings, Scream's mother would head for the kitchen and, if asked for something, would always say, "How ya fixed for socks and underwear?" The meaning of which is probably "what else do you want," no doubt. Wilma Dunn also wrote to tell us that her mother, when being teased by a family member, would tell them to "Gis' ohm." That saying meant "get home," and was used on the cover of a book of her recipes that went to family members. And thanks to all of you for sharing your family's quirks and oddities with us ...

We had a lady tell us this week that her dog was prescribed Viagra by his veterinarian for high blood pressure ... too bad the old boy was neutered (the dog, not the vet) before he was diagnosed with the problem ...

The Nevada Appeal had a lovely 140th birthday party last week ... lots of people enjoying lots of good food and drink and tours of the facility. Little did they know that Pinto Colvig (the original "Bozo the Clown") worked for them in 1905 as a teenager (we learned that from the "Bozo Museum" in Jacksonville, Ore.) ... so there ... and you thought we weren't on the cutting edge ...

Speaking of clowns (not really ... but it was too good not to use) ... Steve Wassner didn't get his paper last Tuesday, nor did he get it last Sunday. He wondered since the Nevada Appeal has such a large circulation increase over and above their expectations, that they were instituting a odd-even schedule (sort of like the watering policy) to conserve papers ... inquiring minds want to know ... (giggle, giggle)

"Star Wars" mania has descended again, and reminded Ed Cordisco of the "old days" and the time he and his roommate and some friends camped out in New York City to see "My Fair Lady" ... they spent the night and got into the theater, but it was standing room only ... nevertheless, they got to see the show and enjoyed every minute of it, even if their legs ached from standing that long ... some things never change ...

Andy Harvey sent us the "World's Shortest Fairy Tale" ... "Once upon a time a guy asked a girl, "Will you marry me?" She said, "No" ... And he lived happily ever after. The end."

Dick Campbell's son, Richard, has embarked on a new business called "Sierra MC Limited." It features "custom home inventory services," wherein they document your personal property by making a digital photo inventory of your valuables ... so if things are destroyed in a fire or flood, or you're robbed, you have a complete description of everything that was lost. For information, call them at 315-4388, or reach them on the web at www.sierramclimited.com. An idea whose time has come ...

Carolyn received a beautiful coral cashmere sweater for Mother's Day ... it reminded her of the time she used to "borrow" her mother's cashmere sweater (also coral) for special events and dates ... until the time that her mother put it into her brand new dryer to dry it ... yup, you got it right ... it came out fitting a Barbie doll (well, maybe not "quite" that small, but close) ... let's hope she learned from that unfortunate experience and reads the "how to care for the garment" label ...

Next week, go down to Heidi's, have a cup of coffee, and wish April Weiss a "Happy Retirement." She is going to start taking it easy on May 31 after working at Grandma Hattie's, Tequila Dan's and Heidi's for the past several years ... Cheryl Young of DETR is also heading out on Friday ... may they both enjoy some leisure time, sleep late, and do the fun things they didn't have time to do before ...

And Pastor Stan Pesis celebrated his 20th anniversary with St. Paul's Lutheran Family recently ... apparently Father's Jeff and Jerry were there to roast him on the occasion ... assuming he survived that, we congratulate him heartily, and wish he and his wife, Ruth, many more wonderful years serving this community ... we are all fortunate to have them here ...

And Happy Birthdays to Nancy Gourley, Coe Swobe and Tyler Jesse ... no, they're not triplets ... just happen to have birthdays in the same week ...

And let's hope Carolyn is having a fine time in Cozumel ... and remembers to bring us all presents ...
