SILVER SPRINGS - A search of Lake Lahontan will continue this morning after a Memorial Day reveler disappeared under the murky waters Saturday afternoon.
The 21-year-old Reno man was last seen when he jumped from a boat carrying about seven others off Beach 4 on the Silver Springs side, according to Lyon County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Page.
The man's name is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
Page said authorities received a cell phone call for help about 5:15 p.m.
"They stopped the boat to swim. The guy jumped out of the boat, swam around for a few minutes, then the next thing they know he's going down," he said.
An estimated 14,000 campers clogged the 14 beaches that span 30,000 square miles of land between Lyon and Churchhill counties.
Lahontan Recreation Area is 45 miles northeast of Carson City via Highway 50 East.
Boats with sonar scoured the area's wind-stirred waters where the man went down, but came up empty. The search was called off at nightfall.
Page said the Lyon County Sheriff's Department has search and rescue crews camping through the long weekend.
"It's just too dangerous out there right now," he said about 9 p.m. Saturday night.
Crews will resume the search at 6 a.m. today.
