Nevada troopers responded to 33 traffic accidents, including one fatality, on Northern Nevada highways during Memorial Day weekend, said Trooper Chuck Allen.
From Friday to Monday, troopers wrote 438 speeding tickets, 110 seat belt citations and eight child-restraint citations.
They investigated nine injury accidents, 21 property damage accidents, assisted 189 motorists and responded to two hit-and-run accidents and one fatal accident at Highway 50 East in front of the Piñon Plaza, where Maria Koenig, 88, of Carson City was killed Saturday about 10:30 p.m. when she was struck by a car as she crossed against the light.
The statistics cover Carson City, Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, Fernley, Dayton, Silver Springs, Gardnerville, Minden, Lovelock, Fallon and Yerington. Three of the accidents involved alcohol, Allen said.
"I think safety wise it was a safe weekend. Vegas had three accidents with four fatalities," he said. "With the extra enforcement, the roads were safer. Troopers made a lot of stops looking for seat belts."
Additional shifts of troopers and Carson City deputies were on the road as part of the nationwide "Click it or Ticket," campaign aimed at citing those not wearing seat belts.
The campaign, funded through a federal grant, continues through Sunday.
