William E. Shelly, 96, a Virginia City resident for the past 23 years, died Nov. 12, 2005, in Carson City. He was born Dec. 3, 1908, in Dublin, Ireland, to Denis George and Blanche E. Shelly.
Before moving to Virginia City, he lived in Lafayette, Calif.
He attended one year of college.
Mr. Shelly was a nurseryman for 50 years.
He served in the U.S. Army for four years and received the Bronze Star, American Defense Service medal and a Good Conduct medal.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Tommy Trefethen, in 1961 in Lafayette, two brothers and two sisters.
Among his survivors are his wife of 55 years, Annabelle of Virginia City; stepchildren Brenda G. Lee of Virginia City, Reginald D. Lee of Reno and Robert D. Lee of Hayden, Colo.; brother Gerald Shelly of Detroit, Mich.; seven step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren and numerous extended family members on the East Coast.

A gathering will be held at a later date.
