Boy Scout troop sells holiday trees

Christmas trees can be purchased from Boy Scout Troop 100's Christmas tree lot beginning Saturday at the Community Roots nonprofit plant nursery on the corner of Highway 50 and Second Avenue

The troop, led by John Alexander and Scoutmaster Dan South, recently trekked Mount Rose to bring Christmas trees back to Dayton.The sale raises funds for Boy Scout programs throughout the year. The noble fir trees are 5 feet or higher and cost $10 to $25 .

Cans and Coats drive planned

A Winter Cans and Coats drive will be held at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St., Dayton.

Canned goods and coats can be dropped off at the center from 8 a.m. to noon, Dec. 3.

The drive, sponsored by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties will provide food and coats for the needy. Call 246-7550.

Deadline today for Gingerbread Contest

Registration deadline for the seventh annual Comstock Gingerbread Contest in Virginia City is today.

Bakers may their showcase goods during December. Entries must be postmarked by today and mailed to: Christmas on the Comstock c/o P.O. Box 994, Virginia City, NV 89440.

Categories are advanced/professional, open, youth and senior. The advanced category is open to any entrant who has previously won first place in the adult category and includes professionals in the food industry. The adult category is open to anyone who has not previously won in that category. The youth category is open to ages 13 and under, and the senior category is open to ages 55 and older. There is a $10 entry fee for the advanced and adult categories, but no fee for the youth and senior categories.

The entries must be made of edible materials, excluding lights and the base, the base can be no more than 5 inches beyond the perimeter of the house. Deliver entries to the Virginia City Visitors Center at Taylor and C streets no later than Dec. 3.

First prize in the advanced and adult category is $150 and the entrant's name on the winner's plaque. The youth winner will receive a $50 savings bond, and the senior winner will receive a ribbon and certificate.

All entries will be auctioned off at the Gingerbread Social at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Delta Saloon.

Parade of Lights entries sought

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the best entries in the traditional Christmas on the Comstock Parade of Lights, Dec. 3 in Virginia City.

The parade will begin at 5 p.m., with registration at 4 p.m. and lineup at 4:30 p.m. Entry fee is $10, to cover the cost of ribbons. Fees must be received at registration. Late entries are welcome.

Victorian Christmas at Fourth Ward School

After the Parade of Lights on Dec. 3, visitors can stop in the Historic Fourth Ward School at 627 South C St. Virginia City

The school will open for the Victorian Christmas celebration 6-8 p.m., so visitors can have a cup of cheer, appetizers and shop in the museum store.

All merchandise is discounted 20 percent, and members receive an additional 20 percent discount.
