Art Bernard

A family service will be at a later date for Art Bernard, 95, who died Nov. 28, 2005. He was born in 1910 in Italy to Dominica Belingheri and Rizieri Bernardini.

He came to America in 1914 and spent his early years in Utah mining camps before striking out on his own at the age of 16.

He had a short career as a professional boxer in San Francisco before moving to Bristol Silver near Pioche in 1926.

He married Edith Naomi Bremenkampf in 1934. She preceded him in death after 70 years of marriage.

Mr. Bernard began as a mine mucker and advanced to mine foreman, mine owner and finally state mine inspector in 1947, when he moved to Carson City.

Then Gov. Charles Russell appointed him warden of the Nevada State Prison in 1950. After leaving that position, he was a real estate broker and building contractor. He retired briefly, but then became a contract investigator for the Nevada Industrial Commission.

He was an avid duck hunter and fisherman. For more than 30 years, he wrote a newspaper column "Gun Powder," which was published in many local newspapers throughout the state.

He was active in many organizations, including as a 63-year member of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Nevada, Carson Lodge No. 1, and a 60-year member of Rotary, where he was designated a Paul Harris Fellow. He was past president of the Carson Rotary Club, member and vice president of the National Wardens Association, honorary curator of Mining for the Nevada State Museum and past board member of the Eagle Valley Children's Home. He was also a past member and served as director of the Reno Executive Club, past member and director of the Canvasback Gun Club and a member of the Carson Valley Nut Club.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his infant daughter Layle Lorraine; brothers Dominick and John Belingheri; sisters Anita Fachini and Agnes Lytle; parents and stepfather Dominick Belingheri.

Among his survivors are his sisters Norma Lehman and Enrica Paselli; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Carolyn Bernard; daughters Marcia Bernard Cuccaro and Patti Bernard; grandchildren Donald II, Cobi Hess, Catherine Cuccaro, Kevin Cuccaro and Chelsea White; eight great-grandchildren; and several nephews.
