A two-vehicle, head-on crash on Kingsbury Grade on Sunday evening sent three people to the hospital - at least two of them with serious injuries - and closed the road for about 90 minutes, authorities said.
A Toyota pickup heading uphill about 31Ú2 miles from Carson Valley veered into the path of a Toyota pickup heading downhill about 5:40 p.m., said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Larry Barnes.
Occupants of both pickups had to be extricated.
"It totaled both vehicles. It was pretty gnarly," Barnes said.
The single occupant of the uphill pickup, 46-year-old William Howe of Stateline, and the husband and wife who were in the downhill vehicle, Fred and Valerie Wright of Reno, were taken by ambulance to Minden. Two helicopters then flew the victims to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
Barnes said that Fred Wright, whose leg was apparently broken in the crash, was in surgery Sunday night.
The crash remained under investigation, and alcohol was being looked at as a possible factor, Barnes said.
The road reopened about 7:15 p.m.
