Classic kick at WNCC

The Argenta trio plays at the Nightingale Concert Hall at the University of Nevada Reno at 8 p.m. Friday. This is one of the best classical groups in the area, and will be playing compositions by Beethoven and Saint Saens. Tickets are $13 for most of us, $8 for UNR students, seniors and children.

Then Chad Twedt plays a piano recital with James Winn at 3 p.m. Sunday. This is a dual piano performance and is free. That night, pianist Rong Fan offers a free collection of ancient Chinese music in the same hall, 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the University Jazz Big Band offers another free concert, same place, at 7:30 p.m. Busy folks at UNR.

Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa play tonight

I got it wrong last week when I wrote that Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa played Thursday night. They actually play tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Tickets are $15 general; $12 BAC members, seniors and students. Call 883-1976 or visit www.breweryarts.org.

Foyeh and Orchestra Africa's music is a melting pot created out of a unique fusion of traditional Nigerian Yoruba music including Highlife, Afrobeat, folklore with jazz, rock, pop and Latin music. You an expect that the hall will rock away.

Two fine theatricals

A new kind of musical, "The Last Five Years," opened last weekend at the Brewery with Joshua Jessup and Andie Anderson in command. And command they do. The music may not have you tapping your toes, but it is fresh and exciting.

This was the first performance of a show in the Performance Hall, which proved to be a fine site for such a show.

"The Last Five Years" plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center. Tickets are $22 general seating and $18 for members, seniors and students. Friday's performance has a "2 for $22" deal for students. Call 883-1976.

Then there are two one-acts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21-22 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson City Community Center on the stage apron. Carson High School teachers Karen Chandler (drama coach at CHS) and Jason Macy (English teacher) did the solo work. Each directed the other's show.

Chandler's "High Drive" is a New Yorker-ish drama about a woman on a high drive, screwing up her courage to leap. Chandler shows that she knows what she is talking about when she teaches. She's a must-see for theater folk.

Macy's "21-A" show is much more active, with 13 changes of costume. It's another singular triumph. and if Macy is as good at English as he is at acting, his classes must be very popular.

History and horses

Sounds like nice nostalgia. "Remembering The Wild West" is presented Saturday at noon at The Grille in NV 50, 10051 Highway 50 E. It's billed as a discussion of Nevada's wild horses and includes entertainment, food and a fashion show. Call 246-4477.
