Shopping for health tour set for Raley's

A grocery store tour at Carson City Raley's with Raley's Registered Dietitian Earline Bennett is 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Join Earline for a 60-minute walk through the store, highlighting the best food choices for weight management, diabetes and heart health. Space is limited.

Blood donors needed before holiday season

The need for blood increases as the holiday season approaches and United Blood Services is urging everyone who is able, to come to the Carson center to donate.

In appreciation of those who donate during the month of October, there is a drawing to win a fully automated IGT Slot Machine. Additionally, every donor will receive a pair of certificates for pie from Denny's Restaurant and drink tokens courtesy of Piñon Plaza.

On Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Oct. 31, from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., United Blood Services will host its annual Safe Halloween Party with arts and crafts, treats, a costume contest and a fishing pond. Call United Blood Services at 887-9111 to schedule an appointment.

For donor convenience, the center will remain open until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Pizza will be served to those who donate between 4-7 p.m. The Carson City center is at 256 E. Winnie Lane.

Writers' workshop focuses on kids' lit

Aspiring authors and illustrators are invited to a free, daylong workshop Saturday at Western Nevada Community College on children's literature. WNCC's Lone Mountain Writers group and the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators offers a fall workshop from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the college's Cedar Building, 2201 W. College Parkway.

The 10 a.m. keynote address is by children's writer Terri Farley, author of the Phantom Stallion series. Farley will speak about writing middle-grade and young adult fiction.

Participants can bring brown bag lunches and enjoy informal critiques and networking. They can choose to attend one of two three-hour afternoon workshops.

WNCC English Professor Marilee Swirczek will offer a session on "The Telling Detail," to help writers deepen their understanding of image in imaginative literature, through hands-on exercises and examples from classic children's stories.

Theodocia Swecker will present "After the Manuscript is Written," an illustrators session concentrating on book design, from storyboard to dummybook, to page layouts and finished artwork. Time will allow for artists to work on their books, with instruction available.

Registration for the afternoon workshops is limited. Preregistration fee: $30 for SCBWI and Lone Mountain Writers members; $35 for others. Fee at the door: $35 Ð members; $40 Ð others. Call 445-4284.

Bingo at senior center this Sunday

Young at Heart Bingo will be Sunday at the Douglas County Senior Center. Doors open at noon, with early-bird games starting at 1 p.m. and regular games at 1:30 p.m. The progressive pot is $530. There will be free coffee and snacks and food for sale. You must be 21 or over. Call 267-4897.
