Companies do wonderful things behind the scenes to help those in need

We have companies in town that do the most wonderful things - behind the scenes, a lot of times.

Last winter, the SBC Telephone Pioneers and the main representatives of SBC Corp. in Reno purchased more than $5,000 worth of coats, jackets and sleeping bags for children in motels to make sure everyone was warm.

This year, Vital Signs stepped up the pace and did a coat and jacket drive. We all remember how cold it got last year, and it's looking the same for this winter.

Each year, Carson Nugget provides Thanksgiving dinners for everyone who needs one - and the casino never asks a question. It also provides all the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for children in juvenile detention who cannot be home during the holidays.

April Flint from Harley-Davidson Financial Group continues to sponsor more than 100 middle- and high-school students who, with help from the Karson Kruzers Car Club, go Christmas shopping each year.

And this year for the first time, we will help 200 elementary schoolchildren from every school within Carson City enjoy a shopping spree because of a huge donation from Western Nevada Supply in Sparks. The company will also be sponsoring another 200 students in the Douglas County and Tahoe areas.

If you know of a company or organization trying to do something wonderful for children, young adults and seniors, let me know. I would love to let the public know how truly lucky we are here to have them in our town for the things they do.

Speaking of Vital Signs, Hannah McIntosh gave me an update that she and her family have received and delivered more than 100 jackets to counselors and nurses throughout the district.

She wanted to thank Mercury Cleaners for donating free dry-cleaning services. But Hannah is not done. She wants to make sure there are another 200 jackets distributed before the real cold weather comes our way.

Carson City Pop Warner is teaming up with Round Table Pizza again today. It's Monday Night Football, so who wants to cook? Don't look for the coupons; they will be on site at Round Table Pizza at Eagle Station for this tasty event.

For every pizza purchased - dine in, takeout and delivery - today, the corporation will give back 20 percent of total sales to scholarships for football players and cheerleaders for the entire day.

You don't just have to order dinner - take the whole office to lunch, or order a pizza party at work.

I usually don't tell people what's going on over Nevada Day weekend; that would take up a whole page. But there is one cool event at the Governor's Mansion you might not want to miss.

The Carson City Republican Women will host their annual Nevada Day Pancake Breakfast. A delicious breakfast of pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, orange juice and coffee will be served before the parade by local, state and national politicians.

Proceeds Benefit: The scholarship fund for Carson and Dayton high schools. One senior from each school will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship in May.
