MoneyTalk lecture series continues

Today's real estate trends will be considered in a free "MoneyTalk" lecture at Western Nevada Community College at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Reynolds Center for Technology, Room 103.

WNCC business professor Larry Goodnight will be the guest speaker and answer questions following his presentation. "MoneyTalk" lectures are offered monthly by the WNCC Division of Business and Technology.

Capital Classic canceled

The Blue Thunder Band took second place overall out of 14 bands at the Festival of Bands competition in Eugene, Ore.

"We had a very good weekend," said Felicia Wirgau, band director of Carson High's marching band.

The Capital Classic event, traditionally held at Carson High School the Friday before Nevada Day weekend, was canceled because lack of participation.

"We didn't have enough bands," Wirgau said. "We'll have to plan better for next year."

Blue Thunder will perform Saturday in the Nevada Day Parade and later that day at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Ask questions early for emergency program

The Tri-County Visions program, a program of the Leadership Alumni Association, will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. The topic will be emergency management.

Guests will include Jeff Page, Lyon County sheriff's captain and emergency manager; Harry Raub, Douglas County's emergency management technician; and Stacey Giomi, Carson City fire chief and emergency manager.

They will discuss the status of local emergency management, tell how counties are working together and what people can do to help, and outline the ideal emergency preparedness scenario for the Tri-County region.

Capital City Band to perform for Nevada Day

The Capital City Community Band will present its annual free Nevada Day Concert at the Railroad Museum at 1 p.m. Sunday. The concert will feature a variety of music, from show tunes to rousing marches.

"We always present a big variety of music so we can try to please almost everyone," said Richard Doede, the founder and director of the band.

Book fair has medieval theme at St. Teresa

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair Nov. 7-10. Families and teachers are invited, and the fair will feature a special medieval theme: "Enter the Kingdom of Reading - Where Books Rule."

A Fantasy Breakfast Event is 9-11 a.m. with theme activities from the Charlie Bone, Harry Potter and Elyon book series.

Students can pose for pictures with Clifford and King Redican while sitting on a throne.

The book fair is 8-8:30 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. at St. Teresa, 567 S. Richmond Ave.

The book fair will offer specially priced books and education products, including newly released and award-winning titles, children's classics, interactive software, adult books and bestsellers. Attendees can help the school raise money for schools affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita through the One for Books programs.
