Symphony begins holiday rehearsals

The Carson City Symphony will begin rehearsals for its 22nd "Holiday Treat" concert from 7:15-9:30 p.m. tonight at the Carson High School band room.

The Symphony, named Carson City's "Organization of the Year 2004," is conducted by David Bugli. It is a community orchestra of about 55 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. It is open to string players at any time without audition, and to other instrumentalists when positions are available. Current openings are for violin, viola and bass. Musicians interested in joining should contact the symphony at 883-4154.

Author speaks about time of world wars

Carson City Library will present author C.O. Lamp at 6 p.m. Thursday. Lecture topics include World Wars I and II, Glenn Miller and memories of Lamp's days as a hospital pharmacist and county prosecutor. He prepared intravenous medications used in the first kidney transplants performed in Arizona. His presentation will include a question-and-answer segment.

Growth topic of river symposium

A Carson River symposium - "Operation and Administration of Water Resources on the Carson River" - is 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at the Plaza Convention Center.

The symposium will provide information and discussion on the complex issue of how the water resources of the Carson River actually work. Presentations will address issues such as the administration of water allocations, transfer of agricultural water to municipal uses and the regional water system. Speakers include Gary Stone, federal water master, and Assemblyman Pete Goicoechea.

According to Ed James, general manager of the CWSD, "As growth continues in the Carson River watershed, we need to better understand how the river functions and is administered to ensure that we have adequate water to meet future growth, while at the same time preserving agriculture and protecting the environment."

The public is welcome. Cost is $10, and includes lunch and snacks.

Volunteers sought to help with taxes

Volunteers are needed to give four hours per week for 12 weeks at the AARP Tax-Aide Program. Last year, Nevada volunteers helped more than 18,000 mid- to low-income and senior clients with their federal returns at more than 50 AARP Tax-Aide sites.

Assisting more clients will require more volunteer counselors who provide this free service. Counselors receive comprehensive training in the preparation of tax returns and the use of computers to electronically file these returns. The classes are in December and January. Participants are asked to volunteer at least four hours per week between Feb. 1 and April 15.

Auditions to follow theater meeting

The Carson Valley Community Theater will hold its quarterly membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Pizza Barn in the Gardnerville Ranchos, 811 Short Court.

All members and persons interested in promoting community theater are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be followed by auditions for "Santa's Little Helper," a holiday melodrama.
