Carson girls soccer rolls to victory

It didn't take long for Carson High's soccer team to establish itself Tuesday night - 15 seconds to be exact.

Cassie Bowman scored on Carson's first shot of the game, and the Senators went on to an easy 11-3 nonleague win over Bishop Manogue at Carson High School.

Carson improved to 2-0 heading into Saturday's Sierra League opener with arch-rival Douglas at 1 p.m. at Carson.

Carson outshot Manogue 32-7. Bowman, Brandi Vega, Amanda Osborne, Danielle Benamati and Kayla Sanchez scored two goals apiece, and Kasey Cano added one.

"They did well," Carson coach Randy Roser said. "I actually thought the match might be a little tougher. They're a new team. We'll probably see them in the playoffs.

"We ended up working on a lot of things; playing proper through balls instead of just banging it upfield. We've been working on settling the ball and then playing it proper."

Roser admitted that thoughts about a tight match ended after Bowman quickly scored the Senators' first goal.

Benamati made it 2-0 in the fourth minute with the first of her two goals.

Manogue came back with its only goal of the half in the seventh minute when Carson was unable to clear the ball out of its zone, and Erika Anquiano dribbled the ball in and banged a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and was ruled to have crossed the plane of the goal by the officials.

Carson had two good scoring opportunities in the next nine minutes, but were turned away both times.

Vega made it 3-1 in the 21st minute when she rebounded in Michelle Fleming's shot which the Manogue goalie was unable to contain. Eight minutes later, Carli Smith misfired over the crossbar, but seconds later, Benamati banged one off the goalie's hands for a 4-1 lead.

Sanchez ended the first half with a goal at the 38th minute, and she opened the second half with a goal at the 43rd minute to make it 6-1.

Manogue's Gwen Swift, who lives in Carson City, sliced the deficit to 6-2 when Carson made a bad pass trying to clear the ball. She scored again 14 minutes later to make it 7-3.

Carson dominated play in the last 16 minutes, scoring four goals in that span.

"Danielle (Benamati) played well," Roser said. "Cassie Bowman goes unnoticed. She is at center midfield and places balls from the middle. (Defender) Samantha Valerious did a nice job."

The defense made goalie Alli Ottos' job easy. She had two first-half saves before giving way to Brittany DeRosa in the second half.

We have some work to do, though," Roser said. "Their three goals were mental mistakes."

Carson High's junior varsity soccer team rolled to an easy 9-0 nonconference over Dayton.

Ashleene Stocke, Natalie Burba, McKenzie Groth, Emily Watson, Lauren Schulz, Kim Burke and Jinna Gray all scored for the Senators.

Carly Mathit played well in goal and Allie Collier did a nice job defensively.

Carson is now 1-1.
