Entertainment books are on sale at the Children's Museum

The new 2006 Entertainment Books are at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada.

Save hundreds of dollars with 50 percent discounts at many fine and casual restaurants and fast-food eateries.

Library citizenship class receives grant from Soroptimists

Carson City Library's Hispanic Services Coordinator Javier Ramirez recently accepted a $838 grant from Soroptimist International of Carson City.

The proceeds will purchase materials for the ongoing "citizenship class" organized by Ramirez at the Carson City Library.

Class members have included residents from various Central and South American countries, Canada, Australia, China, Iran, Tahiti, Scotland and the Philippines.

New Fire Safe Council chapter may form in North Carson

Carson City residents are still hard at work trying to protect their neighborhoods from the threat of wildfire.

Several city chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council were formed this summer with the assistance of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and another one may soon be in the works.

Residents of North Carson City are meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management, 5665 Morgan Mill Road, to consider a proposed fuels treatment project and formation of a local chapter of the Nevada Fire Safe Council.

Under the proposed fuels project, some BLM land and some private adjacent land in the area would be treated to reduce the amount of highly flammable vegetable.

The meeting is open to the public and sponsored by BLM, the Carson City Fire Department and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

Established Carson City chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council have set meetings and agendas:

• The Mexican Dam/Pinion Hills Chapter will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the BLM Field Office. On the agenda: the cost and possible locations of installing a dry hydrant to provide additional water storage in their community, reducing fuel on vacant lots, and evacuation plans.

• The Kings Canyon Chapter will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Carson City office of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12. On the agenda: future grant projects and an update on the Russian knapweed problem.

• The Timberline Chapter will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Cooperative Extension office. On the agenda: future grant projects, focusing on the need to control cheatgrass in their area.
