Cyclist identified in fatal fall from bike

A Dayton man killed Thursday when he fell off his mountain bike on State Route 341, has been identified.

According to Trooper Paul Morris, bicyclist Jason Royer, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:45 p.m accident a half-mile north of Highway 50 East in Mound House.

Morris said witnesses reported Royer was northbound on the road's edge when a tractor trailer passed him at about 25 mph.

"An eyewitness said the truck was 90 percent past him and (Royer) started wobbling and just fell over, striking his head" he said. "The trucker saw him wobbling in his rearview mirror."

An autopsy Friday revealed Royer died from a fractured skull. It did not appear he struck any portion of the truck, Morris said.

He said Royer was dressed in cycling gear down to his shoes, but was not wearing a helmet.

"He died instantly," said the trooper who was on scene within three minutes of being dispatched. "It seems like maybe he was trying to move over, caught the roadway edge and just lost control."

The Highway Patrol is asking witnesses to contact the NHP at 688-2500 with any information.
