Golf tournament planned to benefit those suffering from breast cancer

October is recognized as national Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Here in Carson City, for the fourth year Soroptimist International has come together with the community to to help provide more than 330 free mammograms and breast ultra sounds, in addition to raising awareness.

This is near and dear to every Soroptimist member, especially to events coordinator Dixie Busch, who is a breast cancer survivor.

Hand-in-hand with Great Basin Imaging, they do not turn anyone away.

The philosophy is simple: "All women, no matter their age, race or financial status deserve easy access to early detection screening."

This year's fund-raising golf tournament still needs a few more golfers of all talent levels, so get a foursome together and help these great ladies fight breast cancer.

Thanks to Darlene Nevin taking one moment to e-mail me this week, I have had the opportunity to inform the readers of another way of helping the fight against breast cancer.

You don't have to know how to golf, but you do have to have a computer. Log on to the posted breast cancer site listed below and save it as one of your favorites.

The site has had trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to underprivileged woman.

It takes less than a minute of your time to help and doesn't cost you a thing. Easy!

Their corporate sponsors and advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Win-win situation.

Another annual event is coming up and is a great fund-raiser.

All proceeds from the Bordewich Jog-a-thon go back into the classrooms at Bordewich-Bray Elementary.

Each year physical education teacher Linda Hurzel works hard getting this ready.

Between cutting box tops and Campbell soup labels to raise money, this woman put together a fabulous jog-a-thon.

So if you hear the knock at the door, open up the wallet and sponsor some kids finding a healthy way of getting extra money for their school.

Its not that much and you can make a difference.

The youth program is back at the Carson City Library and I know Cory King planned the first event especially for my birthday - what a guy.

Get back into the reading groove at our Carson City Library Youth Department for the very cool fall session of Story Times on Wednesday.

Come early and check out the new surroundings that have keep the youth program closed for a while but they're back in business now.

When: Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m.; Family Story time is held twice each Friday at 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Toddler Lapsit, for ages 2-3, is held twice each Thursday at 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Cost: Free admission tickets are required for the Toddler Lapsit.
