Fundraiser to help Dayton grad with chronic myeloid leukemia

A spaghetti fundraiser to benefit Joey Conti, a graduate of Dayton High School who has chronic myeloid leukemia, is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 911 Beverly Drive.

Tickets are $5 each and may be ordered until Thursday by calling Kelly Ibarra at the senior center at 883-0703. Tickets are limited.

Raffle tickets are $1 each and may be purchased at the dinner. Ibarra is in need of paper products to help with the dinner and needs more silent auction items.

Chronic myeloid leukemia is most successfully treated with a bone marrow transplant and Joey is waiting to find if his younger brother is a match.

All the money raised will be given to Joey to help with medical expenses.

Anyone interested in helping, but who cannot make the dinner, is welcome to contribute to the Joey Conti Cancer Fund, account no. 6477449810 at any Wells Fargo bank.

Ghost town mystery author for young readers visiting area

Jan Pierson, author of a series of mysteries, will be visiting the area to promote "The Haunted Horse of Gold Hill," which is set in nearby Gold Hill. The book is about two 12-year-olds, an eccentric archeologist aunt and a teenage drifter who go on a wild ride back through time.

The 12-year-olds discover an orphaned wild mustang colt circling a tombstone near Gold Hill and decide to find out more once they hear that the wild horse has been seen there for hundreds of years.

"The Haunted Horse of Gold Hill" is loosely based on the true story of John and Henry Jones who went out looking for their horse during a blizzard in 1871. They were all found three days later.

Pierson, aka "Calamity Jan," will speak at 7 p.m. at the Gold Hill HoteI on Nov. 1 for its lecture series. Pierson has written nine books for young readers. One of her other titles is "Goodbye God, I'm Going to Bodie."

Carson City students find success at college

Tyson Reed, from Carson City, performed a musical tribute to J.R.R. Tolkien with the St. Olaf Band during the homecoming game at the Northfield, Minn., school.

Reed is a junior at the college and plays in the cornet/trumpet section.

Devon Anderson, also of Carson, started at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, this fall.

He participated in an orientation that introduced the academics and cultural life at the school, and also a four-day outdoor excursion. Colby's 520 first-year students were selected from more than 4,000 applicants.

Coat drive benefits homeless children

There are more than 300 homeless children in the Carson City School District, and even more may be going to school without coats, say school officials. Vital Signs & Graphics has a goal of collecting at least 500 coats to distribute throughout the school district and other local programs.

People may donate new and gently used coats for ages 5-18 through the month of October. Mercury Cleaners is donating their services for any used coats received.

Monetary donations also will be accepted and used to purchase new coats for kids.

Coats can be dropped off at Vital Signs Banners & Graphics, 1400 S. Carson St., next to Batteries Plus. For more information, call Hannah McIntosh at 884-2990.

'Paint Me a Story' experience for young children at ceramic studio

Eclectic Clay, a ceramic studio, is under new ownership and has added many new things, including "Paint Me a Story," a reading and painting experience for 2-8 year olds.

Tuesday and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. children we be read a story, then paint a pottery piece that corresponds with the story. For more information call Joy Hartman at 841-7044.

Christmas Cards designed by Seeliger second-grader

The Community Council on Youth is still accepting orders for its 2005 Christmas Card. This year's card depicts the Capital Building at Christmastime, including a choir and lighted trees.

Majesta, a second-grader at Seeliger, designed the card through a contest held earlier this year. Join in the fun and celebrate your capital city with friends.
