Firefighters are patrolling what's left of a 16-acre fire on the south side of Water Canyon above Genoa today.

The fire, located ¾ the way up the Carson Range, was extinguished at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Lightning from Friday's storm started the blaze in heavy timber at about 8:15 p.m. More than 100 people from all over Carson Valley called 911 when the fire started and it was visible through the night.

Firefighters closed Foothill Road on Saturday for helicopter operations, but after ground crews had a successful night cutting a line around the fire, air operations were reduced.

Douglas County Animal Control officer Nancee Goldwater will be releasing a rehabilitated hawk 4 p.m. today at Carson Valley Middle School's athletic field.

Goldwater will talk about the Valley's raptors in this event co-sponsored by animal control and the Douglas County Public Library.

Today will be mostly sunny, but very breezy with winds out of the southwest between 13 and 24 mph. The high temperature is expected to be around 86 degrees with the low dropping to 46 tonight.

The long-range forecast is calling for slightly warmer high temperatures through the week, with a chance of thunderstorms developing next weekend.
