What makes 3,000 riders commit to the Death Ride? Why do they travel to Alpine County? Is it to face five mountain passes, 129 miles of pavement and a daunting 16,000 feet of elevation gain?

Recognized throughout the cycling world as one of the best produced one-day events in the West, the Tour of the California Alps covers a course, which includes Monitor, Ebbetts and Carson Pass. It is remote, mountainous, pine and sagebrush covered country.

Hundreds of volunteers, who handle everything from food to communication, make the tour a reality.

In 2006, an estimated 750 people volunteered to do everything from handing out water to keeping everyone in touch.

Leading up to this one day event every July, the county's population of 1,200 more than quadruples with friends and family of the 3,000 riders.

Out of 58 counties in California, 37 participated in this years California's Counties exhibits. Alpine County won a silver award for its exhibit, Death Ride Water Stop, that thanks all of the volunteer groups that make this event happen.
