Look to the southeast on Saturday night and you may see a faint orange and brown haze on the horizon. The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club third annual Truck Pull is Saturday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and event organizers warn attendees to bring their ear plugs and be ready for trucks to roar.
The event begins revving up earlier in the day with a pedal tractor pull for children.
MLM Motor Sports, based in Central California, is providing the four-wheel-drive trucks for the 6,200-pound weight pro modified and super stock classes, and is organizing the truck pull. They will be bringing exhibition vehicles, including the Jack Rabbit Freightliner and the Runnin' Wild Corvette.
"We're bringing in some professional classes. All they do is pull. They're dedicated to pulling vehicles. Those are the guys who travel all over," said Brian Massetti of MLM Motor Sports.
Another class are the stock and street vehicles, which consists of local competitors, according to Massetti.
"These are street-driven vehicles. Most of the guys ride to the event," said Massetti, adding that some need to hitch rides home because the competition "taxes" their trucks a little too much.
Registration for the stock and street vehicle class is between 1-5 p.m. on Saturday.
"Just show up Saturday afternoon and we'll put them in their place," said Massetti.
About 80 vehicles registered for the truck pull last year, many from California.
"They came from as far as the Modesto, Jackson areas last year," said Massetti. "It's not that far from our local area."
Featured again this year are entries for the modified tractor pull. Massetti said two tractors from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, are entered this year. One was built by students and the other by a professor, but both are powered by Allison aircraft engines. Another modified tractor is powered by the turbine engine of a helicopter.
Sponsors of this year's truck pull are: Wilson Construction, the Carson RV Superstore, Sunshine Construction, Golden Nugget Automotive, G&M Trucking and Rhinobuilt.
Gates open at 3:30 p.m., the Kids' Pedal Tractor Pull starts at 4 p.m. and the main event, the truck pull, begins at 6 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, located off Pinenut Road.
Tickets can be purchased the day of the event. The cost for adults is $12, seniors and children ages 6-12 are $8, and 5 years old and younger are free. Parking is $2.
Food, beer and refreshments will be available. The 20-30 club will be barbecuing tri-tip sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers.
All of the proceeds made go to organizations for children in Douglas County.
"Bring your ear plugs and blankets and be ready for a night full of fun," states the Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club Web site.
