Bill and Lorrie Barnum's new business was named after a novelty gift they now sell in their gift shop.

Bill Barnum purchased a gadget that turned a peeled hard-boiled egg into a square hard-boiled egg that he gave to a friend. He told her he bought them from Raley's and they came from "squared-egged chickens."

"When we were starting the shop, I thought that would be a great name for it," he said.

The Square Egg gift shop is in the building next to Carson Valley Country Club Restaurant in the Gardnerville Ranchos and used to house the golf course's pro shop.

The shop features gifts and crafts such as clocks, lamps, bookends, candles, miniature golf carts and wall art. Lorrie Barnum sews, paints and makes quilted placemats, coasters and rooster dolls.

Bill Barnum said he's not especially crafty, "not in the least," but some local craftspeople contribute to the gifts sold at The Square Egg.

"We have a little something for everyone and so far we've been pretty successful," Barnum said. "The western gifts and fish seem to be the big items."

Other featured gift items are safari animals, dolphins, unicorns, fairies and angels.

"The glassware is popular since the Crystal Kaleidoscope (gift shop) is gone," he said.

Barnum said to come in for a demonstration on how to make square eggs.

A grand opening event is planned when Christmas gift items arrive.
