With school starting next Wednesday and our best friends' son being a Coleville High senior this year, my mind drifted back to when we met him. He was 4 or 5, and was so cute and bright. We've had the fun of being involved in his growing up, but fortunately without the parental duties. It's hard to believe he's this close to being an adult in what seems like such a short time (a short time to us, but probably not to him). I wish all the kids, but especially the seniors, a memorable and super school year.
RPAC reminder
Don't forget that County Department of Public Works representatives will be at the Sept. 7 meeting to discuss improvements and repairs to their facilities here. Come to the meeting and give your input on what is important to you.
Highway progress
I know we all appreciate the newly paved lanes on Highway 395, but CalTrans tells me there is still a little more to be done. Susan from their public information department says the work is projected to be totally completed in early September. There will be clear sailing ahead.
This and That
n There was a total of 32 teams involved in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraiser on Saturday evening. Our Antelope Valley survivors team had a great time. They want to thank everyone who helped make their first Relay a success - sponsors of the team, those who cheered them on, and Mt. View BBQ for their potluck barbecue's delicious main dish. Let's make it even bigger and better next year.
n Mono County Friends of the Library met Aug. 21 with three local artists displaying some of their latest work. Margo Petterson brought one of her oil portraits, Marye Roeser showed some of her watercolors and Nancy Sims gave us a look at some of her jewelry. What I wouldn't give to be that talented. It is also time for their annual membership drive. It's $25 for family and $10 for individual membership and can be paid at the library.
n Bobbie Guterl wanted me to thank all her friends and neighbors who have called, brought food, etc., to her since her injury. This also leads right into some big thanks that should be given to our local paramedics for the extra care and attention they give our residents. They go the extra mile beyond the usual care that you would expect, and we appreciate them so much.
n Antelope Valley Art Show reminder - get busy working on your entries. The show will be at the Walker Senior Center on Nov. 12, with entry applications needed by Oct. 25.
n The fishing on the river has been fantastic, especially with the additional fish that have been planted. They are doing great with their catches, including some big ones. Think about spending part of this weekend out there.
n I'll confess to making some idle time just to watch the hummingbirds attack the feeders on our deck. We have had up to four birds at a feeder at one time. They are such amazing and enjoyable little guys to watch that it's hard to make myself get back to work.
I hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend.
