Gardnerville resident, Bronwyn Mason, owner of Artisans International Gallery, traveled with her mother, Zita Kennedy, and two friends, Pam Mayhew of Minden, and Pat Thompson of Danville, Calif., on a journey of a lifetime to southern Africa. Starting in Capetown, where Bronwyn does business with several artisan co-operatives, the ladies enjoyed visiting the wine estates, the end of the world (Cape of Good Hope) and Kirstenbosch Gardens. They then traveled to Victoria Falls and on to Botswana where they spent 10 days in three different safari camps in Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. They slept in luxurious tents among hippos, elephants, and a myriad of bird species providing them with the most magnificent wake-up calls every morning. They were enchanted every day by herds of cape buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, impalas and prides of lions. They also saw less-often-seen sable antelopes, leopards, kudus and the elusive nocturnal aardvark. The savannah was dotted with termite mound skyscrapers as tall as some of the trees. The guides and trackers they met at the camps were well-educated on the sights of the bush, including all of the flora and fauna. All four travelers vowed to return again.

A multi-sensory journey through southern Africa will be presented at Artisans International Gallery at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23 . The journey will include photography by Pam Mayhew, wine from the Capetown region, and a variety of arts and fine crafts available for sale at the gallery.
