After being dark for the summer, the Douglas County Genealogy Group will have their first meeting of the new year at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in the Douglas County Public Library in Minden. The speaker will be Cindy Sutherland. She will speak on "Tombstone Tales, Symbolism and Stories of Nevada Cemeteries."

Sutherland has lived in Nevada for 26 years and received her degree in history from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has been involved in researching, writing and lectures on Nevada cemeteries for 20 years. She is a historian for the Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City and was instrumental in obtaining a grant for the restoration of the historic Civil War monument in the Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Many people refer questions to Sutherland regarding Nevada Historic Cemeteries, symbolism on head stones as well as historic data. Her other credentials are working as an archivist and museum curator for the Fourth Ward School Museum in Virginia City and collections at the Carson Valley Historical Society in Gardnerville and Genoa. She is a Contract Researcher for the Legislative Counsel and has written biographies on all 59 Assembly Speakers.

She considers Nevada Historical Cemeteries as outdoor museums and head stones tell the story of the community and people interred there.

All interested in genealogy are invited. Information: Erwin and Nancy Powell, 782-9464.
