Girls' basketball: Coleville opens with a win and a loss

The Coleville girls' basketball team opened the season with a 44-32 loss to Lee Vining.

Playing with only seven girls, only two of which are returners from last year, the Wolves struggled, committing 30 turnovers and shooting only 21 percent from the field.

Junior guard Amara Rowley led Coleville with 14 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. Freshman forward Molly Garcia took advantage of her first varsity start with a solid performance, scoring eight points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Senior Kayla Johnson contributed six points and seven rebounds and junior Sarah Holden made a solid contribution, grabbing 10 rebounds and stealing the ball three times.

Junior forward Kim Torley, who missed Friday's game, returned to the starting lineup with a vengeance, scoring a game-high 18 points to lead the Wolves to a 39-32 victory over the visiting Gerlach Lions.

Torley also led Coleville with 11 rebounds.

Rowley had another strong performance, scoring six points, grabbing seven rebounds and stealing the ball eight times.

Garcia had seven points and seven rebounds and Kassie Pemberton had four points and seven rebounds.

"After really struggling Friday night, I thought we made significant improvement Saturday," Coleville coach Will Sandy said. "We lost six key players from last year's team and will really have to work hard to make the playoffs this year."

Coleville (1-1) travels next to Eureka Friday for a two-day tournament.
