On the day after Thanksgiving, sheriff's deputy Tim Delaney spotted a large amount of water running out the door of the Walker Thrift Store. Quickly, a call was made to Doris Jones of the thrift store. When they entered the building, they found that a pipe had broken in the ceiling of the Walker Senior Center next door. Doris called Don Baxter right away, and he rushed over to help, even though the county employees had a holiday that day. He found the shut-off valve for the broken pipe and stopped the flow of water into the building. He was able to keep water service at the normal level for the Walker Community Center and public restrooms, with no damage to those buildings. After Don stopped the water coming to the broken pipe, Roger Jones and Ted Nail swept water out of the building and moved furniture in the senior center to prevent more damage. I've been in the building since then, and there will be some ceiling repair and new paint required; but fortunately, the damage was held down to much less than it could have been. Thanks to Don, Roger and Ted from everyone who uses these facilities.
Christmas caroling
An evening of caroling is being put on, for all area residents to enjoy and participate, by local churches this Saturday, starting 5 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. There will be a community Christmas tree, for which you are welcome to bring an ornament. After meeting at the center, the group will be caroling about 5:15 at Sierra East Mobile Home Park, then approximately 5:45 at the Marine Housing. After the caroling, everyone is invited back to the center for hot chocolate and cider, cookies, visiting, and to sing some more songs.
Holiday dinner
The annual holiday dinner will be 5 p.m. Dec. 13, with turkey or ham and all the goodies that go with them, at the Walker Senior Center. The cost is $4 for seniors and $5 for all others. This meal is in addition to the regular daily lunch served at the center, so it will be a "good food day" there. To be sure of enough food for all, reservations are required, so call (530) 495-2323 right away.
Christmas social
Be sure to have your reservations made by Sunday for the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce's social at the Walker Community Center on Dec. 16. Social hour will start at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Call (530) 495-9666 or (530) 495-2508 to reserve your place for dinner.
This and that
n Regional Planning Advisory Committee meeting is 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Walker Community Center.
n The boys' Wolverines basketball team has continued doing well, beating Bridgeport last week.
n After many, many months of not-so-subtle hints from my husband Mike, along with wistful looks at every flat-screen HDTV he has seen, we have finally taken the big step and ordered our new HDTV. It is supposed to be delivered before Christmas, and I sure hope it is, since he is now like a kid waiting for Santa to arrive. I know I'll enjoy it, too, so all is well for our holiday and the many football games coming. Hope your holidays go well, too.
